The Gaon Rabbi Meir Yosef Kotkin (born in 1827) ‘The Tzaddik of Jonawa’ – author of Sefer “Panim Me’irot” on the Yerushalmi, which he printed in 500 exemplars and distributed for free among the Torah scholars of his generation. Was a disciple of Rabbi Avraham Shmuel Eishishker, author of Responsa “Amudei Esh”, and the son and disciple of the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Elazar Chaim, from the leading disciples of Rabbeinu Chaim of Volozhin. At the age of 15 he married Mrs. Merka, daughter of the businessman Moshe Gandz of Wolkovisk, who was renowned for her qualities and her selflessness for the sake of Torah study. Rabbi Meir Yosef served as Av Beis Din of Rossia and in Brestowitz, and from there moved on to serve as the Av Beis Din of Jonawa (Kaunas County, Lithuania)  for nearly 30 years.
