Responsa Mayim Chayim by the Gaon Rabbi Chaim Hakohen Rapaport, Av Beis Din of Ostroh – Zhitomir, 1857-58 – first edition – with the famous response to Maran the Ba’al Shem Tov – with approbations of the giants of Chassidus: the holy Rebbe of Apt, the holy Rebbe of Chernobyl, and the “Sar Shalom of Belz.
On page 25/b is a question that was sent from Mezhibuzh to Rabbi Meir, Av Beis Din of Starokostiantyniv (son of Rabbi Yaakov Emden, the author’s maternal grandfather), regarding a questionable lesion on a healthy lung, which the local Rabbi had ruled Kosher, but some of the community leaders did not agree with him. Amongst those signing the letter is “Yisrael Ba’al Shem of Tlust” – Maran the Ba’al Shem Tov. Rabbi Meir’s lengthy response, in which he validates their concern and challenges the ruling of the Mezhibuzh Rabbi, begins with a few lines of admiration and honorifics to the Ba’al Shem Tov: “A champion of Judea and successful in Israel… provides succor and salvation… the exalted and renowned Rabbi of good name, our master Rabbi Yisrael…” (Researchers of Chassidus have long debated the meanings and decoding of the long and poetic titles in the opening to this responsum).
Both parts of the Sefer are bound in one volume. Part one on topics of Orach Chaim and Yoreh De’ah, and part two on topics of Even Ha’ezer and Choshen Mishpat.
