“Storehouse of wisdom and piety, man of deeds” – a rare letter sent to Maran, the pillar of Ruling, Rabbi Shalom Yosef Elyashiv when he was 24 years old by his relative Rabbi Yaakov Shmushkowitz of Boćki (Bialystok region).
Rabbi Yaakov Shmushkowitz’s letter is written on a letterhead of his father, Rabbi Nissan Bentzion Shmushkowitz, Av Beis Din of Boćki, dated Jan. 2, 1934.
The front page deals with a request for help in obtaining an immigration certificate for him, He writes that the main stumbling block he faces is not bureaucratic, but his lack of membership in the Zionist party, “and therefore they push me off to the far future… and right now they give only to those who are registered in the Zionist party”.
On the reverse are deep Chiddushim on a topic in Yevamos p. 5.
He notes that he is enclosing a picture of himself for remembrance – a picture taken during his years learning by the Gaon Rabbi Shimon Shkop.
