Original, signed photographs from the historic visit: Three original photo prints of Israeli president Mr. Zalman Shazar during a visit by C”K Admor of Lubavitch.

When President Shazar prepared to go visit the Rebbe in 1966 (when he was already three years into his first term), he was pressured by various elements who claimed that due to his position it would be unseemly for him to come to the Rebbe. The Rebbe should be asked to come visit the president at his hotel.

Three days prior to the planned visit, President Shazar called the Rebbe and told him that he is under pressure to change his custom and not come to the Rebbe. He asked, accordingly, if the Rebbe would be willing to come and meet him in his hotel. The Rebbe replied that he must consult with his father-in-law, the Rebbe Rayatz OBM.

That Friday, the Rebbe traveled to his father-in-law’s gravesite, and on the way back requested that the president be informed that “Der Shver loszt nisht (my father-in-law doesn’t allow it)”. When President Shazar heard this he immediately responded that if this is so, then he will go to the Rebbe.

On Motza’ei Shabbos, July 30th, 1966, close to midnight, President Shazar arrived at 770 in a motorcade with police escort. Thousands of Chassidim were on hand to greet him.

President Shazar brought the Rebbe a gift – a box with a bundle of Chassidic writings, in the Rebbe Maharash’s handwriting.

Regarding this meeting, President Shazar later told Rabbi Azriel Zelig Slonim: “The Rebbe showed me the place where his father-in-law – the previous Rebbe – rejoiced on Simchat Torah, mourned on Tisha B’Av, and said Chassidus. ‘This I could not bring to you’, he said. When we were in the Rebbe’s room he told my escorts: ‘Here, in this room, tens of thousands of Jews received advice and support, that is why the meeting needs to be here’.”
