A short time after his election, the prime minister of Israel, Mr. Menachem Begin, travelled to the US, mostly for the purpose of meeting with President Carter of the US. He used this visit to obtain a personal “Yechidus” by the Rebbe, which took place on the 2nd of Av, 5737 (July 17, 1977).

Shortly after 10PM the prime minister’s motorcade arrived at 770, accompanied by a police escort. When Begin’s car drew near the building, the Rebbe came out to greet him – a rare gesture – and met him on the steps leading into 770. The Rebbe accepted Mr. Begin’s request, face the television cameras, and stated: “I bless him with more than one hundred percent and wish him complete success, for the sake of the Jewish nation, for the sake of the land of Israel, may he merit to bring closer the complete redemption through Moshiach, swiftly in our times.”

The Rebbe and the prime minister then secluded themselves for a private meeting, which took two hours and 15 minutes.

Before us are two original photographs of this unique and publicized visit. One is stamped with the stamp of the photographer “Levi Yitzchak Freidin”, and the other with the stamp of “Yaakov Sa’ar – the Government Press Bureau”.
