Letter from the Gaon and Tzaddik Rabbi Shmaryah Gurary, the elder son-in-law of the Rebbe Rayatz of Lubavitch, with a heartfelt plea to save lives at the outbreak of WWII. Riga, 1940.
In the letter, he beseeches his friend, Rabbi Chanoch Hendel Havlin of Yerushalayim, to approach his friends and the activists of Agudas Yisroel in Yerushalayim, to rescue his brother, Rabbi Yisrael Gurary, because this is a literal issue of life and death and it is imperative that a certificate be obtained for him. The certificate should be sent to Triest, Italy.
The son-in-law of the King, the illustrious Gaon Rabbi Shmaryah Gurary – the Rashag (1898-1989) was born in Kremenchuk to Rabbi Menachem Mendel Gurary, a Chossid of the Rebbe Rashab. In his younger years he worked to increase the boundaries of Torah by running the Yeshiva in Rostov. The government looked askance at his activities, and even had him arrested for a time. In 1921 he married Mrs. Chana, the Rebbe Rayatz’s oldest daughter. The Rashag wandered with his father-in-law to all the places where he was exiled. Also in the US he undertook great actions on behalf of Lubavitch.
