The Rebbe used to send this kind of photograph to the Chassidim who were in the refugee camps at a time when they couldn’t meet in person (“Tishrei in Lubavitch” attachment, 2020, p. 50). It is highly likely that this picture was given personally to that Chossid by the Rebbe. Such photographs are extremely rare and no known additional copies that survived intact are known to exist.
The photograph was preserved in exceptional quality inside a volume of Gemara that belonged to one of the leading Chassidim in Russia, together with a handwritten Ma’amar of Chassisus which the Chossid preserved as a measure of “seeing the Rebbe’s countenance”, as defined in the teachings of Chabad.
This rare copy appeared on the cover of the “Kfar Chabad” newspaper, vol. 1913, in honor of the 12th of Tammuz 2021.
Platinum printing is a chemical monochrome photo development process which uses platinum deposited directly on the paper, as opposed to silver suspended in a gel layer. This type of print is characterized by a very large range of tones, better definition of shadows, and extremely long durability.
Slight stain on the bottom right. Good condition.
