Sefer Tzofnat Pa’ane’ach on the Hafla’ah portion of the Rambam, Piotrków, 1903, by the immense Gaon, Sar Hatorah, Rabbi Yosef Rosin OBM, the Rogochover Gaon. This exemplar was preserved in the treasury of the Cahabd governor Rabbi Shmuel Michel Treinin OBM. Includes a handwritten ownership notation “Treinin”. The title page also has stamps of the “Chassidic Merchants Shul Leningrad”.

The renowned Gaon of Rogochov was born in 1858 to a family of Chabad Chassidim. At the age of 3 he merited to receive a blessing during a Yechidus by C”K Admor the Tzemach Tzedek of Lubavitch. In his youth he studied under the Geonim and Gedolim of Brisk, including Maran the Beit Halevi and the Maharil Diskin.

He was known throughout the Jewish world for his immense genius and for his countless, deep Seforim. According to estimates, he was the most prolific Halachic responder in Jewish history, having written nearly one hundred thousand responsa!
Served as the Rabbi of the Chassidim in Dvinsk (Duenaburg/Daugavpils), and was greatly admired by all the Gedolim of the generation.

As said, the Rogochover Gaon came from a Chabad family, and received incredible and unusual honor from the rebbes of Lubavitch – the Rebbe Rashab, the Rebbe Rayatz, and C”K Admor of Lubavitch, who conferred on him the title “Sar Hatorah”.

The Lubavitcher Rebbe said once about himself, that his own method of study is based on the methods that the Rogochover innovated. In one of his Sichos the Rebbe said of the Rogochover that “He is a wonderous and frightening thing”, as well as saying that the revelation of the teachings of the Rogochover, “An innovation which has never been seen before”, is a preparation for the coming of Moshiach.

The relationship between the Rogochover and the Chabad governor Rabbi Treinin were known and are mentioned also in the Igros Kodesh of the Rebbe Rashab. Treinin was the contact person between the Rogochover and the Rebbe Rashab, and had a substantial part in the Rogochover’s livelihood when he lived in Peterburg, Russia, during WWI.

The Rogochover’s biography was told by the author Rabbi Yair Borochov, in his book “The Rogochover Gaon” (Orot Publishing, 2023). An affidavit by Rabbi Borochov is attached to this item.
